31 years ago today, at approximately 10:50pm, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono, were retuning to their apartment at The Dakota in New York City, when he was shot in the back four times and was pronounced dead at 11:07pm at Roosevelt Hospital. The man responsible for his death was Mark David Chapman, who was sentenced to 20 years to life and remains incarcerated to this day at The Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, NY. Chapman has been denied parole six times. As news spread of his death, broadcasters reporting the news cried on air, fans poured into the streets surrounding The Dakota holding candles, sobbing, singing Imagine and Give Peace a Chance. The world was in shock, and over the next few days vigils were held all over the world for Lennon, as people mourned the loss of one of the most influential and greatest artists of all time. John Lennon, a man who had touched so many people around the world with his words of love and peace was gone forever. Perhaps Norman Mailer, an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter, said it best when reacting to the news of Lennon’s death, “we have lost a genius of the spirit.”
